Title: Memories and Dust
Artist: Yvi
Characters: Samantha Carter, Jolinar/Roosha
Challenge:
stargate_summer These are my three art pieces for
strangepromises's wonderful story "Memories and Dust", which you can read here
Programs used: GIMP 2
Sizes: 1: 800*600, 200KB; 2: 500*732, 180KB; 3: 1024*768, 450KB
Artist's Notes These three pieces were a lot of fun to do. The first is inspired by a quote in
strangepromises's story that really hit me and is a bit... messy/grungy, the second is a general 'book cover' and the third a very clear wallpaper. I like all of them in their own way and I hope
strangepromises does as well - she deserves it after writing such a nice Sam-centric story.

Memories and Dust art
Date: 2009-07-09 05:50 pm (UTC)The images in the second one are intriguing and would make me want to read the fic even if it weren't already on my to-read list.
I love the grunginess and blur and light effects in the first one, and how arresting all the faces are, and it is a terrific quotation. I especially like the lower-opacity echoes of 'remember,' and the blur on the brightest 'remember' -- that suggests the layering of memory and how some memories are sharp and clear and others are hazier, and sometimes they're a scattering and sometimes a mix.
The brightness and color and clarity of the caps in the third one is beautiful work, and the filmstrip motif and explosive background light are great. (The bg light flare strikes me as a visual echo of the light burst from the hand device in the second-lowest-left cap, and what a hand device light burst looks like to the person the device is being used on, and with the filmstrips it also evokes the light that shines through film to project a movie on a wall. Very cool.) It's a wonderfully vivid and eyecatching wallpaper, and it gives the eye so much to do, following along the frames in each strip of film and exploring the background. As in the second piece, the images are intriguing and sell the fic really well, in addition to illustrating it. I like the butterfly-looking pattern in the upper right, and want to know how/if that's related to the butterfly in the second piece, and what I'll find in the fic when I read it.
Lovely. :-)

Date: 2009-07-09 06:03 pm (UTC)To be honest, the butterflies are rather random ;) I just didn't want to leave the upper right corner in the wallpaper empty and liked the butterfly I had used on the cover, which was also completely random. Basically, they are there for being pretty.
But don't tell anyone that *g*
Did I already say 'thanks'? :)
Re: Memories and Dust art
Date: 2009-07-09 06:12 pm (UTC)The butterfly totally works as added prettiness, and actually it suggests all kinds of things about chrysalises and development and one kind of life existing in potential inside another -- a whole lot of connections with the Tok'ra/host and previoushost/Tok'ra/newhost relationships that I'm sensing but flailing around trying to articulate. No idea if those things are elements in the fic, but the intimations of them through the butterfly image work on me as an added advertisement for it. So a big hooray, both ways. :-)
